Dear Avery...

I wrote a letter to my baby girl still growing inside me, so I wanted to write one to her big sister too.

Dear Avery,

I haven’t even started writing and my eyes are already filing with tears. Our world is about to change in a big way and I just wanted to write you a note to remember these last days and weeks where you’re my only child.

From the moment you entered this world you’ve been surprising us. Though the details are a bit blurry since labor was oh so long, I will never forget the moment they laid you on my chest and your daddy and I saw and heard you for the first time. It was so surreal. After 8 long months to finally hold you in my arms and look into your beautiful blue eyes. As I lay here typing this on my phone your sister is moving around in my belly, and I just can’t believe we’ll all be meeting her so soon.

Through every stage and milestone in your two years you have continually blown us away with not only your abilities but your sweet sweet heart that just shines through! When you randomly say “I love mommy” my heart feels like it’s melting, bursting, and shattering all at the same time. I wish I could bottle you up forever!

As you get older you’ll hear from many parents that they love their kids more than anything, and your mom and dad are no exception. No one can prepare you for the love you have for your child, and I hope someday you will experience it for yourself as a mother. Know that we will forever do anything for you. We’ll be there when you don’t want us to be, you can tell us even the things you think will make us mad or disappointed. There is nothing you will ever do that will change our love for you!

I still can’t believe that you are going to be a big sister. Baby girl is so incredibly lucky to have you for a role model, and I pray, best friend for life. I already see your nurturing spirit and gentleness when you play with your dolls. I can’t wait to witness you and your sister growing together. The coming change will stretch us both and force us to adapt to new ways of life, but the thing that won’t change is we’ll be side by side, figuring it out together and becoming even stronger.

The funny thing is that we won’t know when our last day of just us will be until it’s already over. So I’m holding on a little extra to every hug, snuggling before bed a little longer, and watching you in amazement a little more closely. You have changed me, my little love, in every possible way. I’m not the same person I was before I knew you and for that I am grateful. You’ve taught me what really matters in life, you’ve taught me how to stop sweating the small stuff, and you’ve taught me that I can do really hard things. Every day we’ve had together has been my favorite day. You’re my tiny best friend and you make everything extra fun. Thank you for being my greatest teacher.

I know someday soon we’ll look back and feel like our time as a family of three is hard to remember, but know we’ve adored every second. I hope when we look back at all the pictures and videos from your first two years of life you’ll be able to see the amazing adventures we’ve been on with you!

The world is a crazy crazy place, and life can be really dark sometimes. I’ll do whatever it takes to protect you from what I can, and for the things I can’t control, I’ll be your rock to help you through. You’re my light, you’re my love, and you will always be my baby, the one who made me Mom. I love you.
